Prebiotic is a non-digestible food ingredient that beneficially affects the host by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activity of one or a limited number of bacteria in the colon, and thus improves host health.

Technological and functional properties:

•      White fine powders well soluble in water; slightly sweet with no off taste and after taste.
•      Can function as balk sweeteners, thickeners, texturisers, water binding / balking / anticristallisation agents.
•      Non hydroscopic, stable in sour conditions, highly thermostable.
•      Easy and comfortable in application (can be dosed in dry and dissolved condition).
•      Have low caloric values - 232 kcal/g and low glycemic index.
•      Characterized by high tolerance – intake of up to 40 g/day does not cause flatulence and diarrea.

Recommended dosages and nutritional claims according to EU legislation

•      EFSA recommends a daily intake of (at least) 25 g of dietary fiber for adults. FDA (USA) has a similar recommendation for food fibers - 25-28 g per day for the 2000 calories diet.
•      EC Regulation No 1924/2006 allows the following nutrition claims for the fiber:
•      Source of fiber: “A claim that a food is a source of fiber, and any claim likely to have the same meaning for the consumer, can only be made where the product contains at least 3 g of fiber per 100 g or at least 1.5 g of fiber per 100 kcal”
High in fiber: “A claim that a food is high in fiber, and any claim likely to have the same meaning for the consumer, can only be made where the product contains at least 6 g of fiber per 100 g or at least 3 g of fiber per 100 kcal”

Health effects related to intake of prebiotics

•      International Scientific Association of Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP): «prebiotic effects include defense against pathogens, immune modulation, mineral absorption, bowel function, metabolic effects and satiety». In other words prebiotics:
•      Improve gastrointestinal transit (bowel function) known as fiber effect
•      Improve composition of gut microflora providing growth of “good” bacteria (bifido- and lacto-) and defending against pathogens – prebiotic or bifidogenic effect
•      Improve mineral absorption, first of all of calcium and magnesium
•      Help to improve the immunity (immune modulation)
•      Help to improve metabolic effects due to low glycemic index and ability to decrease blood cholesterol and triglycerides, can be used in diabetic and low carb diets
•      Help to improve appetite and satiety resulting in decrease of BMI
•      Help to reduce the risk of gut cancer
